Do you have a website?
Maybe you’re thinking about getting a website?
Maybe somebody is going to build a website for you?
I’m going to share the things that your website needs. I mean, these are things that you really, really, really need on your website.
Let’s look at the things your website should have.
AN ABOUT PAGE
I know it may seem obvious but some people don’t put much thought into it. It doesn’t matter what platform you’re on, an about page doesn’t automatically create itself. You have to create one.
An about page is where people find out more about you, about what you offer, about your story. It can be short, it can be long, it doesn’t matter, just make sure you have an about page!
A CONTACT PAGE
Why? So people can easily get in touch with you. If you’re in business to make money, which would be most businesses I know of, then make it easy for them to contact you.
You can add a phone number, email address, even a contact form. The goal is to make it really, really easy for anyone who wants to contact you to be able to easily get in touch with you.
If you have a brick-and-mortar business, include things like your address, the hours are open, and even a map.
SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS
If you are on social media put your links on your website. Now you may not want every one of your social sites listed, and that’s okay, but at least list your core social media sites. Especially the ones that reflect your business and your brand.
Also make sure you link to your page and not the general page of the platform. For example, if your business is on Facebook as Bob’s Garage, then link to that page and not just Facebook.
NO BROKEN LINKS
Say it with me, NO. BROKEN. LINKS!
You might be surprised how many times I go to websites, and I click a link only to find out it’s either a dead link or goes to the wrong page.
Broken links not only cost you business but can hurt you with Google rankings too. Check every link you have on your site!
My site is on WordPress and I decide how my menu bar is laid out. I decided exactly what I want on my menu bar, also called the navigation bar, and the order I want everything to appear.
The menu bar is also a great place to put easy access to the most important things on your website. Again, making it easy for people to navigate and find the good stuff on your site.
If you make it too hard for people to find what they’re looking for, chances are they’ll just move on to your competition.
A CUSTOM URL / DOMAIN NAME
When you sign up for a web provider, whatever name you chose when you set-up your account, will be followed by the name of the web provider.
For example, let’s say you own Bobby’s BBQ and you get a site with WordPress. When you sign-up for your account, your URL will be something like bobbysbbq.wordpress.com.
That is not a custom URL.
Using this example, you want to buy the url BobbysBBQ.com and have it redirected to your website replacing the URL you get when you signed up.
It’s not as complicated as it sounds. I buy all of my domains through GoDaddy.com and redirect them to whatever site I have. If you get stumped, GoDaddy, or your web provider will be able to walk you through it.
Do your research before you create a website! The last thing you want to do is invest time and money on a logo, social media, and a website only to find out the URL/domain name you want isn’t available.
How do you check? Go to GoDaddy and search the name you want. You’ll find out immediately if it’s available or not
People probably love you. You’ve done good work for them. Make sure you get their testimonials about you and your work.
Anytime I do a project for someone, I ask them if they’ll write up a testimonial about the work. I then put some of them on my website and on my Facebook page. I’ve even used them as graphics in some of my videos.
Do you ever buy anything on Amazon? Do you read the reviews? The same thing applies here. Before someone buys whatever you’re selling, they want to read about what others have said about you.
If you haven’t done this, try it. You may be surprised how many people would love to talk you up if only you would ask!
A MOBILE FRIENDLY THEME
More and more people use their phones for browsing. You need to make sure the website theme (the look) you choose is mobile friendly, which is also called responsive design.
Your site may look different on mobile than it does desktop. Mine does. But even though it looks somewhat different, the information is still there and optimized for a phone.
With the world going more and more to mobile, not having a mobile ready, mobile friendly site will hurt you.
So that’s my list of things your website should have to be successful. Everything listed apples to any kind of site, for any kind of business. And yes, even your personal brand.
