If you’re interested in producing video, on any level, I’ve put together a rundown of the basic gear I have and use. What I use totally depends on what I’m shooting, where I’m shooting and sometimes how quickly I may need to upload and share what I’ve created.
The good news for you is a lot of really good gear is reasonably priced and really, really nice. I mean a lot of the newer smartphones record 4K video. Think about that!
- Very easy to compare like products.
- Verified reviews to read what others have experienced.
- Most products have questions and answers relating to that product.
- It’s hard to beat Amazon Prime shipping.
- Good return policy with great support!

Here is a list of my basic go-to gear.
Most everything I shoot is with a Canon 70D, a webcam or an iPhone 6+. All produce great looking HD video but I highly recommend investing in external mics for better audio simply because the internal mics aren’t very good.
Canon EOS 70D DSLR (Body Only)
Absolutely love this camera for so many reason including a touchscreen!
Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920
Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens
Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens
Canon EF 18-55mm f/4-5.6 STM Lens
CamKix Deluxe 5-in-1 Smartphone Lens Kit
Not a must-have, but something to consider for your smartphone. Definitely gives the smartphone camera a better look. I use the wide angle more than any.
I am a big Rode mic fan. They make quality, affordable mics. If you do buy a Rode mic, take the time to register them since many of them come with free, extended warranties!
Rode VideoMic GO Lightweight On-Camera Mic
The VideoMic Pro is a slightly better on-camera mic, but I use this one more since it is powered by the camera itself. No worries about batteries dying and losing audio.
Rode VideoMic Pro Compact shotgun microphone
Rode NTG1 Shotgun Mic
This is used on a boom pole with the audio going into my Zoom H4N Digital Recorder (below).
Rode VideoMic Me (for smartphone)
A small little mic that will greatly improve your smartphone audio. But, it does NOT work well with LIVE video, actually creates static/noise in the audio. I’ve talked with Rode and they verified it’s not really made for that. Another option, is the SmartLav+ (below).
Rode smartLav+ microphone
Great for any kind of video, including LIVE.
Rode RodeLink Wireless
A near perfect wireless setup. “Pairs” out-of-the-box which is huge and a fraction of the price as a Sennheiser.
Check out Kevin Kolbe on YouTube for videos made with this gear!
Zoom H4N Digital Recorder
A great external audio recorder. Tons of features, lots of inputs, plus can be use as a hand-held mic if needed.
Blue Yeti USB microphone
A great desktop mic that is USB powered. Has four settings based on what or who your recording. Plus it looks really cool!
LimoStudio Softbox Light Kit
Neewer LED Light Kit
Really great, affordable light kit. If you don’t want or need the entire kit, you can pick up the individual lights for around $30 each. They work with batteries or battery pack.
Ledgo LED Ring Light
Ravelli APGL4 70” Tripod with Adjustable Pistol Grip
This is a fantastic tripod and it’s under $80!
A good smaller tripod to have for any camera, including a DSLR. If you’re thinking of vlogging, consider this tripod.
Benro Handheld tripod & selfie stick
This little thing is simply amazing! It’s a selfie stick but also a mini-tripod! I use this exclusively for my iPhone set-up. Small, lightweight and comes with a wireless bluetooth remote!
Evercase DSLR Camera/Laptop bag
Recently switched to this bag since I needed more space plus room for my MacBook Air. Nicely made with lots of pockets.
There you go. Hopefully this list will help you or inspire you! By the way, I am associated with the Amazon Associates program which allows some small financial support to do what I do. Don’t buy for that reason, but if you do…thanks!
