You are so ready to record a video on your smartphone, or as it’s also called “shoot a video” on your smartphone. But you need the basics of making it look not just good, but great!

All of the steps will work on an iPhone or Android. Some buttons may be a little different, but overall the steps will work.

BE YOURSELF.

TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND JUST TALK.

IF YOU MESS UP, KEEP GOING.

RESIST THE URGE TO STOP AND DELETE AND START OVER.

THE MORE YOU DO IT, THE MORE COMFORTABLE YOU’LL BE.

BEFORE YOU START RECORDING, DO THIS FIRST!

  • MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE IS FULLY CHARGED. AT LEAST 80% BATTERY!
  • PUT YOUR PHONE IN AIRPLANE MODE TO PREVENT CALLS AND TEXTS FROM INTERRUPTING YOUR RECORDING.

THE BASICS

PHONE

  1. OPEN THE CAMERA APP ON YOUR PHONE.
  2. WITH THE PHONE SCREEN FACING YOU, TURN THE PHONE HORIZONTALLY ON ITS SIDE. YOU CAN SHOOT VERTICALLY, BUT YOU’LL HAVE MORE FLEXIBILITY WITH THE VIDEO IF YOU TURN THE PHONE ON IT’S SIDE.
  3. KEEP THE PHONE STEADY. YOU CAN USE A TRIPOD IF YOU HAVE ONE OR PROP IT AGAINST SOMETHING.

TIP: BOOKS OR BOXES ARE GREAT TO STEADY YOUR PHONE ON OR AGAINST.

LIGHT

  • MAKE SURE THERE IS NO DIRECT OR BRIGHT LIGHT BEHIND YOU. KEEP ALL LIGHT IN FRONT OR TO THE SIDE OF YOUR FACE(S).

TIP: NATURAL LIGHT IS AN AMAZING SOURCE OF LIGHT!

SOUND

  • PICK A QUIET PLACE WITHOUT LOUD NOISES OR DISTRACTIONS. INSIDE IS BEST, BUT OUTSIDE CAN WORK AS LONG AS THE NOISE IS LOW AND THE LIGHTING IS GOOD (SEE LIGHTING TIPS).
  • THE MICROPHONE IS ON THE BOTTOM PART OF THE PHONE. MAKE SURE YOUR HAND OR OTHER OBJECT DOESN’T COVER IT.

TIP: IT’S OKAY TO LEAVE YOUR PHONE CASE ON.

LOOK

  • CENTER YOURSELF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FRAME.
  • THE FRONT CAMERA IS IN THE TOP CORNER OF THE PHONE. WHEN YOU RECORD, TRY LOOKING AT THE CAMERA INSTEAD OF YOURSELF. IF YOU FEEL THIS IS TOO AWKWARD, DO WHATEVER FEELS BEST.

RECORDING YOUR VIDEO

YOUR CAMERA APP DEFAULTS TO “PHOTO”. TO GET INTO THE VIDEO MODE, TAP ON “VIDEO” (OR THE VIDEO CAMERA ICON). BY THE WAY, WHEN YOU CHOSE “VIDEO” THE BUTTON WILL CHANGE TO A RED BUTTON.

TIP: TAP ON THE ICON WITH ARROWS GOING IN A CIRCLE TO FLIP THE LENS AROUND. WHEN YOU SEE YOURSELF, YOU SET.

WHEN YOU’RE READY, PUSH THE RED RECORD BUTTON. PAUSE FOR ONE SECOND THEN START TALKING.

WHEN YOU’RE DONE, PUSH THE RED RECORD BUTTON AGAIN TO STOP THE VIDEO. THE FILE WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE SAVED IN YOUR VIDEO FOLDER ON YOUR PHONE.

GETTING THE VIDEO OFF YOUR PHONE

YOU MAY BE ABLE TO USE AIRDROP (iPhone) OR OTHER METHODS, BUT THE BEST WAY IS TO ATTACH YOUR PHONE TO EITHER YOUR MAC OR PC WITH THE SAME CORD YOU USE TO CHARGE YOUR PHONE.

EITHER A BOX WILL POP-UP FOR YOU TO SELECT VIDEOS OR THE FILES MAY AUTOMATICALLY START SAVING TO YOUR COMPUTER.

TIP: IF YOU’VE NEVER CONNECTED YOUR PHONE TO YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE DO THAT FIRST BEFORE YOU RECORD IN ORDER TO INSTALL ANY UPDATES OR SYNC YOUR PHONE FOR THE FIRST TIME.

THAT’S IT. YOU’RE DONE!

SEE IT WASN’T AS HARD AS YOU THOUGHT! EQUIPMENT IS GREAT BUT DOING IS EVEN BETTER!

LET ME KNOW HOW CAN HELP YOU CREATE AND EXPLORE YOUR WONDER!
