You stand at the fork in the road. Maybe not a real road, or even a real fork, but at some point in your life you will have the choice of evil or good.

I had never noticed before but the NLT says “plan” when it comes to our actions of good and evil.

If you plan to do evil, you will be lost;

   if you plan to do good, you will receive unfailing love and faithfulness.

Proverbs 14:22

Think about that. God lets us choose, or plan, to do evil or good. Call it free will. Yes He certainly has the power to save and/or even prevent us from doing evil, or even prevent us from doing good if He wants, because after all He is the God of the universe. But God gives us the freedom to plan and do either evil or good. And no, I don’t believe there’s an in-between. We live in a world filled with good and evil. Most every kind of evil, we as fallen, sinful humans have created. Go back to Genesis and see it begin with a simple gesture between Adam and Eve – “here, try this”. God created unimaginable beauty and zero fault around the first two humans ever and in no short time, they choose evil over good.

You and I face these same choices every day. Maybe we don’t seem them as epic as Adam and Eve in the garden, but nonetheless, our choices can lead to doing evil or good. I realize we live in a society that doesn’t like the word evil. That other person over there is the evil one, not me. But the truth is, when I choose sin, I’m evil in God’s eyes. It’s only when I choose good, HIS good, that I’m the total opposite and, as the saying goes, will reap what I sow.

Which brings me to the second part of both choices, both plans: being lost or receiving unfailing love and faithfulness.

God is very clear about the consequences, the results of either. The evil path basically takes us nowhere or as the NLT says gets us “lost”. Lost as I think about it in this sense is nowhere where God is. Unable to find my way, again because of my actions, not His.

Flip it around to the good path and the results are absolutely amazing. Not just love but unfailing love or to say it another way, love that never, ever, ever fails, plus with faithfulness thrown in. God is love. God is faithful. God is good.

Look, I’m not about to pretend that always doing good is easy. Satan is around to make sure we have doubts and desires that take us away from God. But ultimately it is us who plans and chooses evil or good. Both choices with very clear results.

One final thought. Because of God’s unending and undeserving grace, even if we choose and plan evil, we can find our way back to God and be forgiven. Remember it didn’t say “lost forever”. So if you choose the wrong path, look for God, climb back on that road and let God overwhelm you with His unfailing love and faithfulness.

That’s how good wins out over evil.
