Run the Race

My daughter…my incredibly creative, insightful daughter recently said:

“Run the race. Don’t let it run you.”

By the way, did I mention she’s 14!

I absolutely love that a 14-year-old has already figured out something that many of us adults struggle with. And it’s this – the “race” will demand all of your time and attention and blood and sweat and life if you let it.

I have a few things…rules?…that I keep to keep me grounded, or in my daughter’s words, not let the race run me.

  1. I never eat lunch at my desk. Never. Ever. Period. The work will always be there, but I may not be. It’s not about what I eat, but about getting away when I do.
  2. I have me time in the morning. I get up early, grab a cup of joe and do my daily devotional…all by my lonesome. My uninterrupted time.
  3. When we eat dinner as a family, we ignore the phone. If it rings, it rings, but we never, ever get up and answer it.

I’m sure there are more, but these are the ones I adhere to. I find it’s better if I run the race.
